phone slipped from my hand and posted comment before I was finished. I relate to all this. I don’t really believe knocking on the plane before I step on/in will keep it from crashing but I do it every time. I don’t really believe any of the wishes work either but I make them, 11:11, etc. Maybe it’s just trying to send out a little positive spark. Hope you get a swim in soon. I’m in awe that you do that.

Uh oh. I've never knocked on a plane! The question is now: do I start or do I restrain myself? (God willing, I'll swim tomorrow.)

Kathy & Elizabeth, a friend of mine who dodged leukemia at 17 shared her tradition of giving a plane a gentle pat before stepping on it, kinda like an “atta boy.” I picked it up and fear of flying floats across the jetway and out with the luggage.

I'm a hypermiler who tries to squeeze every tenth of a MPG calculation (as shown on my dashboard). I do not "accelerate"; I acquire momentum slowly and then I strive to preserve it by looking far enough ahead that I can lay off the gas as needed. I know all the local traffic lights and can predict their change to red in time to start slowing down so I don't need to stop. The ones with "demand" sensors on cross streets are particularly difficult because there is almost always a building on the corner which prevents me from seeing if there is a vehicle ready to trip the signal. Today the estimate is 46.8 MPG.
